Why should I wear the belt after a C-section?
-
The AbdoMend™ belts were designed to create a gentle recovery after a C-Section birth. Your core stomach muscles had the fascia (a band of connective tissue that supports internal organs and parts of the body) cut and the muscles were stretched open during the operation to deliver the baby.
Getting up and down out and of bed is difficult and painful after a C-section delivery. Compressing the abdomen reduces pain and discomfort so you can move around more easily. Use the belt the very first time and every time before getting out of bed, or rolling to your side, for at least 1month post surgery. Focus on your baby, not the pain!
Protect and support your delicate incision site from tearing or stretching with the AbdoMend™ recovery belt and additional bikini support strap. Tearing and stretching of your incision will cause a larger scar, so wearing the AbdoMend™ recovery belts will help to maintain a smaller scar.
Made from soft cotton, our AbdoMend™ recovery belts do not cut into your skin or side, but still offer the support that you need after your surgery. The belt is easy to wash and adjustable by 8 inches; therefore, it conforms to your changing body and gives you continued support.
You can continue to wear our AbdoMend™ belt as long as you like, but definitely for the first 3 weeks after a C-Section surgery.

Will the belt interfere with my incision healing?
-
Our AbdoMend™ recovery belts were designed to speed your recovery and prevent unnecessary tearing and strain on your incision. This is why we suggest putting on our AbdoMend™ recovery belts before you get out of bed for the first time.
Compressing the abdominal tissue reduces pain, and can lead to a smaller scar with fewer problems. The AbdoMend™ belts will support and protect your delicate incision. Rolling onto your side to feed your baby, moving around in bed and getting out of bed are so much easier when you wear AbdoMend™ Recovery belts.
Allow your skin to breathe several times a day by opening the belt while lying down. Wear the belt for as long as you need support. For further information, refer to the question in our FAQ list “How long should I open the belt for while I am resting and the baby sleeps”
If your skin is very itchy, use the dry skin brush on your abdomen to “scratch” your skin. By using the dry skin brush it helps stimulate the lymphatic flow, reduces swelling and increases circulation. While using the dry skin brush, ensure that you brush toward your heart, or if using the brush below your belly button, gently brush down toward your pubic bone. Follow the directions in our book “C-Section Guide & Hemming Scar Therapy Program” for more information and instructions on your healing and recovery.
Consult your doctor if you have any redness, heat, or pain or if an area looks infected.

How long should I wear the Recovery Belt and Bikini strap, or the Hem-It-In belt?
-
On day one, before you get out of bed, put on the soft and cozy recovery belt and the bikini support strap.
For the first week, put the belt on while lying down, later you can put it on while standing. Wear the belt through the first month.
Remember to allow your skin to breathe by opening the belt. Please refer to the Question: “How long should I open the belt for while I am resting and the baby sleeps?” for further information.
Hem-It-In Belt After a C-Section:
The Hem-It-In belt is great for the 2nd month when you need easy, yet discreet support. Driving and carrying your baby can stress the abdominals, so instead of hurting yourself, protect and support yourself until you strengthen your core.
Remember, when your incision seems to be healed on the surface, it does not mean that everything has healed internally, so please be gentle with yourself.
After a Vaginal Delivery: You can wear the ‘Hem-It-In’ belt immediately after a post vaginal delivery. Using the ‘Hem-It-In’ belt will support and assist your organs and muscles to contract back to a pre-pregnancy state. This provides wonderful slimming reduction for results you will love.

How long should I open the belt for while I am resting and the baby sleeps?
-
Open your AbdoMend™ recovery belt for 20 to 60 minutes a couple times a day, or as you desire. Occasionally allowing your skin to breathe freely will aid in the healing of your incision.
Your skin may be more sensitive after being in the hospital with all of the strong cleaning chemical exposure, stretching and suturing of your skin.
To avoid any further chances of irritation or infection, please fasten the Velcro® tabs and wash your AbdoMend™ belt in cold water with low phosphate soap, and hang to dry. Until the surface of your incision has healed, wash your AbdoMend™ recovery belt every couple of days to keep the belt clean. The bikini support strap does not need to be cleaned as often at it does not lie directly on your skin.

Why should I use the belt and do the scar massage?
-
AbdoMend™ recovery belts protect your incision, and speed your recovery. An unsupported abdomen, with the stretched skin from your pregnancy, can make the incision tear from gravity alone. Compressing your abdomen is an ancient tool for healing and returning to your pre-pregnancy state. A swollen, painful and problematic scar can occur without support.
Internal organs need support Your uterus needs to shrink back to your non-pregnant state. Your bladder and intestines also moved during your pregnancy. Our AbdoMend™ recovery belts help give all your internal organs this much needed support, which will help you heal and recover faster to your pre-pregnancy shape.
Massage is an ancient tool used by women
Massage increases circulation, so you heal faster after an operation. Massage decreases swelling, helps with constipation, and organizes the tissue for a softer scar. Massage and binding help the skin from hanging over the incision or having a lumpy scar.
We show you easy self help techniques in our “C-Section Recovery & Hemming Scar Therapy” program.

Will I have a bigger scar if I don’t wear the belt, or do the massage?
-
Chances are your scar will be wider, and there are more opportunities for your scar to break open, especially if you will be doing any lifting, for example: picking up toddlers and older children. Twisting, lifting and sudden moves all have an impact on an unsupported, uncompressed abdomen that recently experienced major surgery.
Massage therapy, when done in a consistent manner, can have a big impact not only on the size of the scar, but the quality of the softness of the tissue. Our massage techniques work with deep core muscles and therefore do not use any oil. This allows you to be free to work with the massage techniques anywhere and at any time.

Why do I need to massage my scar, won't it heal on its own?
-
History has shown that with the proper attention at the beginning of the healing process, massaging a scar can help maintain a smaller and less painful scar. The tissue fibres need to be massaged for increased circulation and organized for minimal scarring.
Your body will heal on its’ own; however a little help can make a big difference. We show you month-by-month how to approach your abdominal scar, and with just a little attention daily, you can help your body heal with great results. Avoid bladder, reproductive and back pain issues with scar therapy: these techniques can be applied anywhere there is a scar on the body.

What about rashes on my abdomen?
-

Please talk to your Doctor or Dermatologist about your symptoms and when the irritation started.
Skin can be sensitive, and may now be irritated after your C-section birth. Soothing balms can be applied to your skin, but avoid your incision area until it is well healed. Consult with your Doctor about topical creams or other over the counter items that you can take to support your immune system. Avoid lotions with perfumes, as this also can contribute to irritating your skin.
The incision should be free of creams and oils for a period of time post surgery. Speak with your Doctor as to when you can begin to apply herbal oils or other products to your incision area.
Some factors that may cause irritation:
- Irritation from the surgical tape, drugs, cleaning and disinfecting chemicals, laundry soap, plastic or other surfaces at the hospital
- Hormonal changes
- Having your skin stretched during pregnancy
Exposure to Staph B or other infections must be attended to. Talk to your Doctor if you feel something is wrong. If your incision or skin is red, hot, or smelly or if you have a fever, you must be sure to talk to your Doctor.
PUPPP is the most common rash in pregnant women and is characterized by intense itching, with lesions on the abdomen, thighs, arms, buttocks. They typically go away in 1-4 weeks after delivery. Your physician or health care provider can help find a medication that won’t interfere with breast feeding and still provide relief.
To avoid any other possible irritation, before putting the belt on, please fasten the Velcro tabs and wash your AbdoMend™ belt in cold water with low phosphate soap, and hang to dry.
Remember to always allow your skin to breathe for a few minutes by opening the belt while your baby sleeps and you are in bed resting. For further information, refer to the question in our FAQ list “How long should I open the belt for while I am resting and the baby sleeps”.
In case your skin has become super sensitive after the surgery, try wearing the AbdoMend ™ belt over a clean cotton shirt, so that it is not directly on your skin.

Why is it painful to have sex with my partner when I didn’t have a vaginal birth?
-
Some reasons may include, stress on your bladder, uterus, and connective tissue. Theses organs and tissues make up your lower pelvic floor which was affected by the surgery. Having a catheter placed after surgery along with the incision healing can create additional problems.
During your surgery, they lifted your bladder and cut into your uterus and moved tissue around to remove your baby and placenta, then sutured (sewed) you up. Your cervix is attached to the uterus and the vaginal floor area was stretched and compressed. All of this can create discomfort for some time as you heal. If your problem persists, call and discuss this with your Doctor.

-
Will my scar open if I have sex too soon?
-
You should wait and discuss a time line with your Doctor. Wait at least a month, so as to heal without getting any infections, as the surgery opened your system to possible infection.
If you feel vulnerable with your scar, keep your abdomen supported and protected. Remember to keep massaging your abdomen and scar. Talk about your vulnerability with your husband or partner, ask them to massage you. Allow yourself to support one another during this intimate time together.

What about other abdominal scars, will massage help?
-
Yes, other abdominal scars can benefit from massage.
The body responds to massage, even on old scars, to bring elasticity, flexibility and pain reduction. The collagen fibres are always healing, so there is an opportunity to bring organization at any time, it just may take longer to realize a better scar. Time added tension and contraction in the tissue and that needs to be worked through with massage and breathing.
Often, with just a few sessions of the fascial massage technique, the tissue will soften and referred pain will reduce. The body is a fine tuned machine that will respond to touch with intention and focus.
